Why choose bespoke shelving?

Designed around the space, not the other way around

Made to your measurements

Order your shelf to the required width and depth rather than compromising with a standard size. This is especially useful for alcoves, recesses and replacement shelves.

More light, less visual weight

Clear glass allows light to pass through the shelving, helping smaller rooms, cabinets and display areas feel open while keeping attention on the objects you display.

Clean and easy to maintain

Glass has a smooth, non-porous surface that is straightforward to wipe clean, making it a practical choice for bathrooms, kitchens and display spaces.

Glass finishes for custom shelves

Clear toughened glass

A versatile choice for most shelving projects. Clear glass keeps the appearance light and allows the colour of your wall, cabinet or displayed items to show through.

Low iron / extra clear glass

Standard clear glass can have a subtle green tint, particularly visible along polished edges. Low iron glass reduces this effect for a cleaner, more neutral appearance.

Frosted, satin or tinted finishes

Where available, frosted or satin glass can soften the appearance of shelving, while grey, bronze or other tinted finishes can introduce a stronger design element.

Where to use custom glass shelves

Glass shelving for every room

Alcove glass shelves

Make better use of recessed spaces around chimney breasts, fireplaces and feature walls with shelves cut to the width and depth of the alcove.

Bathroom glass shelves

Create discreet storage for toiletries, towels and accessories. Glass is easy to wipe clean and works naturally with mirrors, tiles and chrome fittings.

Kitchen glass shelves

Add open storage to kitchens, cupboards and display areas without visually closing in the room. Ideal for glassware, jars and decorative pieces.

Cabinet & display shelves

Replace broken or missing shelves in cabinets and display units, or create new glass shelves for collections, ornaments and home décor.

Floating glass shelves

Pair your shelf with suitable concealed supports or discreet brackets for a minimalist appearance where the glass appears to float from the wall.

Retail & commercial display

Glass shelving is also suited to shops, bars, salons, hospitality spaces and display cabinets where products need to remain visible from different angles.

Shelf design

Choose the right shape, edge and support

A custom glass shelf is more than just a piece of glass cut to a rectangle. The shelf shape, thickness, exposed edges and fixing method all affect the finished result.

  • Rectangle and square shelves for alcoves, cabinets and wall shelving.
  • Radius corners where softer corners are preferred.
  • Shaped shelves for unusual spaces and bespoke furniture.
  • Polished edges for exposed edges that are smooth to touch and visually finished.
  • Drilled holes or cut-outs where required for compatible fittings, specified before toughening.
  • Visible brackets or concealed supports depending on the look and installation.

The support system should always be suitable for the shelf size, glass thickness, wall construction and intended load.

Choosing thickness

What thickness should a toughened glass shelf be?

There is no single thickness that suits every shelf. The correct specification depends on the shelf span, depth, support points, fixing method and the weight you intend to place on the glass.

Application What affects the specification? What to consider
Small display shelf Short span, shallow depth and lightweight ornaments. A thinner toughened shelf may be appropriate where the support arrangement is suitable.
Bathroom or kitchen shelf Shelf span, depth, fittings and everyday items stored on the shelf. Choose the thickness and support system together rather than considering glass thickness alone.
Alcove shelving Often a wider span and potentially heavier books or objects. Larger spans or heavier loads may require thicker glass and stronger supports.
Commercial/display shelving Longer spans, heavier products and frequent use. Specify the glass and support system around the expected load and installation conditions.

6mm and 8mm toughened glass are commonly used for domestic shelving, but the appropriate thickness is application-specific. If you are unsure, give us the shelf dimensions, span and intended load before ordering.

Measure once, order accurately

How to measure for made-to-measure glass shelves

Measure the space in millimetres

Measure the required width and depth carefully. For an alcove or recess, take measurements at more than one point because walls and furniture can be slightly out of square.

Check the support points

Confirm where the shelf will be supported and how far it will span. The glass specification should suit the support arrangement and intended load.

Specify every fabrication detail

Choose the glass type, thickness, edge finish, corners and any required holes or cut-outs before manufacture.

Review your measurements

Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or reshaped after it has been toughened. Check your final dimensions and fixing details before placing the order.

Important measurement note

If the shelf is going into an alcove, recess or cabinet, do not assume the opening is perfectly square. Take several measurements and allow for the fit required by your installation method.

If your project has an unusual shape, curved wall, template or complicated fixing arrangement, contact us before ordering.

Safety & installation

Toughened glass shelves are made for everyday use

Toughened safety glass

Thermally toughened glass is processed to improve its strength and safety characteristics compared with ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness. If broken, toughened glass is designed to fracture into small granular pieces.

Supports matter

A glass shelf's load capacity depends on more than the glass. Bracket spacing, shelf span, fixing method and the wall or cabinet structure all need to be suitable for the intended load.

Fabrication happens first

Glass is cut, shaped, edged and drilled before toughening. Once toughened, it cannot safely be cut or modified, so all measurements and fabrication requirements need to be confirmed in advance.

Easy everyday care

How to clean and care for glass shelves

One of the practical advantages of glass shelving is how easy it is to maintain. A regular wipe with a soft cloth and suitable glass cleaner is normally enough to keep the surface looking clear.

  • Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth.
  • Remove spills promptly, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Avoid abrasive pads or harsh cleaning methods that could mark the surface or fittings.
  • Do not exceed the intended load of the shelf or its support system.
  • Check brackets and fixings periodically if the shelving is in a high-use area.
Frequently asked questions

Toughened glass shelves FAQs

Can you make toughened glass shelves to my exact measurements?

Yes. Custom glass shelves can be made to your required width and depth, with suitable shapes, edge finishing and other fabrication details specified before manufacture.

What thickness should a glass shelf be?

The appropriate thickness depends on the shelf span, depth, support arrangement and the weight you intend to place on it. Domestic glass shelving commonly uses 6mm or 8mm toughened glass, while larger spans or heavier loads may require a different specification.

Can toughened glass shelves be cut after they are made?

No. Cutting, drilling, shaping and edge processing must be completed before the glass is toughened. Check all dimensions and fixing-hole positions before manufacture.

Are toughened glass shelves suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?

Glass shelving is well suited to bathrooms and kitchens because glass is non-porous and easy to wipe clean. The shelf, fixings and wall substrate should still be appropriate for the environment and intended load.

Can you make floating or wall-mounted glass shelves?

Glass shelves can be installed using visible brackets, clips or concealed supports depending on the design. The support system must be suitable for the shelf dimensions, glass thickness and intended load.

Can I order replacement glass shelves for a cabinet or unit?

Yes. Made-to-measure glass is suitable for replacing damaged or missing shelves in cabinets, display units and other furniture, provided the supporting system is suitable for the replacement glass.

What is the difference between clear and low iron glass?

Standard clear glass naturally has a subtle green tint that can be most noticeable along the edge. Low iron glass contains less iron and therefore gives a clearer, more neutral appearance.
